Step 1 · Your tank

How big is your oil tank?

Most Irish home tanks hold around 1,000 litres. A rough number is fine.

Heating-oil usage, the quick answers

How long will 500 litres of heating oil last?

It depends on the season and your home. A typical three-bed Irish home burns roughly 4-8 litres a day in winter and 1-3 litres a day in milder months with hot water and light heating. So 500 litres is often 2-3 months in winter, or 4-6 months outside it. The calculator above tailors that to your tank, home size and county weather.

How much heating oil does a house use per day?

Rules of thumb for Ireland: a small or well-insulated home burns about 2-4 litres a day in winter, a typical three-bed 4-8, and a large or draughty house 8-12+. Cold snaps push it higher, degree-day weather data is exactly why the calculator asks for your county.

How can I check how much oil is left in my tank?

Most homes still dip the tank with a stick or squint at a float gauge, both are awkward and easy to misread. This calculator estimates your level from your last fill and usage instead, and we can remind you before you run low so you never have to go out to the tank in the cold.

What happens if I run out of heating oil?

Running dry can pull air and sludge into the fuel line, which often leaves the boiler in lockout after you refill. Press reset ONCE only after the tank has oil again, repeated resets flood the combustion chamber with unburned oil and are dangerous. If one reset doesn't fix it, the line may need bleeding, many people do it in minutes, but if you're unsure, stop and call an OFTEC-registered technician.
